I also started looking up directories, but  I found many of them asked for money, some of them had some really questionable linking practices, and most asked for a link back (which doesn't sound too bad, but if they get 'blacklisted' for unethical practices by a search engine, your site could be too if you have linked to them.  Then I found the SEO Friendly Free Directory List at Vilesilencer

This is THE most valuable directory resource I have found.  Listing on 1 or 2 directories will not do you much, you are lumped in with dozens of others, the effect of your site is minimal, but take a little time, submit your site to these 200+  directories (all of which  the Vilesilencer guy has screened, and the effect will be more than noticeable on your site's visibility to the major search engines.

And once again this is FREE.  It's a heck of a public service, you don't ever have to pay them a dime, and they won't gripe.  Of course, if you never get  the upgrade (after writing for a couple of hours, I like to get  the max impact for it) you might gripe.
